Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)

McHenry County Housing Authority takes applications for the energy program on an appointment only basis.  This program will assist low income households by giving them a grant toward their gas and/or electric bills.  In order to make an appointment you must call the Mchenry County Housing Authority at (815) 338-7752.  The following is the schedule of when applicants may apply for the program:

​Beginning November 1, 2018​Elderly, Disabled and Families with Children Under 6 years of age
​Beginning December 1, 2018​Open To All Income Eligible Families

For the program year 2019 households and individuals who meet the above criteria, and have incomes are less than the following maximum for the last thirty days:

How to obtain assistance:

Call the McHenry County Housing Authority at (815) 338-7752 for an appointment.  The program ends May 31st, 2019, or when program funding is exhausted.

Applicants must bring the following documentation with them for the appointment:

  1. Proof of income for all household members for the 30 days prior to the day of their appointment 
  2. Current Utility Bills - gas, electric, fuel oil, propane
  3. Social Security cards for all household members
  4. Current Medical Card, Link Card or WIC
  5. Rental agreement, lease, computation sheet or mortgagte payment book that states amount of rent/mortgage paid.

ComEd Special Hardship Program

The ComEd Hardship Program provides assistance beyond other programs to address special hardship cases.  Individual special circumstances, including severity of the hardship, will be considered.  An eligible household may receive a grant every two years.  For more information, including eligible hardship situations, please see the ComEd Hardship Information Package in the "links" section on this page.  Contact Holly Lyons to discuss eligibility and set up an appointment.
