The McHenry County Housing Authority (MCHA) administers the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) and will begin accepting applications for winter heating assistance for seniors 60 and above and people with disabilities beginning October 1, 2019.

LIHEAP is a state and federally funded energy assistance program for low-income families, in which either a family receives a one-time, lump-sum payment toward energy bills, or is enrolled in a monthly Percentage of Income Payment Program (PIPP), as funding allows.

How to Obtain Assistance:

Book your appointment online with Appointments Plus either by following the link on our website at or directly here:  BOOK NOW, or by calling 815/338-7752.  The program ends May 31, 2020, or when program funding is exhausted.


Applicants must bring the following documentation with them for the appointment:

  1. Proof of all income for all household members for the 30 days prior to the day of their appointment (includes, but is not limited to:   paycheck stubs, Social Security income, Unemployment, SSI, TANF, General Assistance from Township)
  2. Current Utility Bills – gas, electric, fuel oil, propane
  3. Social Security Cards for all Household Members

Note:  Depending on circumstances, other documentation may be required.
