Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)

The McHenry County Housing Authority (MCHA) administers the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) and will begin accepting applications for winter heating assistance beginning  July 27, 2020

LIHEAP is a state and federally funded energy assistance program for low-income families, in which either a family receives a one-time, lump-sum payment toward energy bills, or is enrolled in a monthly Percentage of Income Payment Program (PIPP), as funding allows.

How to Obtain Assistance:

Book your appointment online with Appointments Plus directly here:  BOOK NOW, or by calling 815/338-7752 X237.  The program ends June 30, 2020, or when program funding is exhausted.

Applicants must have the following documentation with them for the appointment:

  1. Proof of all income for all household members for the 30 days prior to the day of their appointment (includes, but is not limited to:   paycheck stubs, Social Security income, Unemployment, SSI, TANF, General Assistance from Township)
  2. Current Utility Bills – gas, electric, fuel oil, propane
  3. Social Security Cards for all Household Members

COMED HARDSHIP 

The Residential Special Hardship Fund can assist with up to $500 on a past due bill for households with specific hardship situations.   Assistance can only be obtained one time every two years.  Contact Raquel Lemus at 815/338-7752 OR rlemus@mchenrycountyhousing.org to discuss eligibility and to arrange an appointment.   Please review the income limits and the hardship criteria in this document:  CLICK HERE
