Success comes from stability. At McHenry County Housing Authority, we not only unlock the doors to affordable housing, we provide wraparound services needed in our community to keep people stably housed.
Working with our partners, we address the current and long-term needs of McHenry County residents through a number of programs, including housing, dental care, energy efficiency programs, rental assistance and home repair services.
The section 8 program would not exist without our partner landlords. The Housing Choice Voucher Program and its’ landlords help families afford decent, stable housing, avoid homelessness, and make ends meet.
We exist to assist low-income individuals and families to maintain an affordable, sanitary, and decent living environment, and to provide them with the means to avoid crisis situations and achieve economic independence.

MCHA’s TBRA program is currently closed to new applicants.
TBRA offers a time-limited rent subsidy (typically up to one year) based on the household’s income. Program participants pay approximately 30% of their income toward their rent, and MCHA pays the remaining rent portion directly to the landlord. Because TBRA assistance is time-limited, those who have been approved for the assistance are expected to pay their rent on their own at the end of the program, generally after one year of assistance. TBRA participants meet with an MCHA caseworker monthly to ensure that they progress toward a successful transition to permanent, independent living within the community. The goal of the TBRA program is self-sufficiency for all participants. A HOME grant funds this program.
Up to 18 months of rental assistance available for qualified applicants. The assistance included up to 12 months of past due rent and rent going forward paid in 3 month increments. Households earning up to 80% AMI whose income or ability to find housing has been affected by the pandemic. Landlords and tenants may apply at www.Mchenryrent.com
Please see the document links for some of the items required for the application.
Once an applicant has been approved for funding checks will be disbursed within 7 to 14 days.
