Energy Assistance
The McHenry County Housing Authority strives to provide housing stability through our programs and referrals with our partner agencies.
Find Assistance with these programs:
- Proof of all income for all household members for the 30 days before the day of their appointment (includes, but is not limited to: paycheck stubs, Social Security income, Unemployment, SSI, TANF, General Assistance from Township)
- Current Utility Bills – gas, electric, fuel oil, propane
- Social Security Cards for all Household Members

Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)
Get HELP with your energy costs from McHenry County Housing Authority (MCHA). Through LIHEAP we are able to assist income-eligible households to pay for utilities, like heat, gas, electricity, and furnace repair assistance. Applications are being taken on a first come first serve basis through August 15, 2025, or until funds are exhausted.

Am I Eligible?
Households with a 30-day gross income that is at or below 200% of the poverty level. The McHenry County Housing Authority (MCHA), as administrator of the Energy Assistance Program in McHenry County, is assisting ALL income-eligible households with their natural gas, propane and/or electric bills and furnace assistance for inoperable heating systems.

Weatherization Assistance
The program is a free service to income qualifying residents of McHenry County. The goal of this program is to make your home more comfortable and energy-efficient.
Improvements can also include air sealing of windows and doors, attic and foundation insulation, dense packing walls, repair/replacement of furnace and A/C, and proper ventilation of your home.
LIHEAP clients automatically qualify for this program, but still need to go through the Weatherization Assistance application process.
Residents who are over income for LIHEAP can still qualify for Weatherization Assistance.
